ABOUT:
The Nissan X-Trail is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automaker Nissan since 2001. It was one of Nissan's first crossover SUV's and was released about the same time as several other companies competing car-based compact SUV's including the Suzuki Grand Vitara, Ford Escape and its Mazda Tribute sibling, the Hyundai Tucson, Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4. The X-Trail is positioned below the truck-based Xterra and Pathfinder and was never offered by dealerships in the United States. The first generation was available in Canada until it was replaced by the Rogue. However, both the Rogue and the X-Trail are sold in Mexico. The Rogue shares the same platform as the second-generation X-Trail and is very similar to the Qashqai. The current, second-generation Nissan X-Trail enters its sixth year of production in 2013, yet remains one of Australia’s most popular SUVs.
At the time of writing this review, in fact, the Japanese soft-roader is battling with the Toyota Prado and Mazda CX-5 to be the best-selling SUV locally for 2012.
The X-Trail's All-Mode 4x4 transmission transfer case enables the driver to select between 2WD, 4WD or 4WD Lock through an electronic switch on the dashboard. The company currently offers a hydrogen fuel cell model named the X-Trail FCV on lease to businesses.
The main production plant of the X-Trail is in Kanda, Fukuoka, Japan; though parts and engines that are produced in Japan are also assembled by other Nissan plants in numerous countries.
From a distance, the 2013 X-Trail n-tec+ looks very similar to the base model X-Trail Acenta, but upon further inspection, you’ll find that it boast small accents that set it apart. The most obvious of these accents are the four 18-inch alloy wheels at the corners, which are a full inch larger than the standard 17-inch wheels on the Acenta.
Wrapped around the fog lamps on the front fascia of the n-tec+ model are chrome surrounds to add a little extra style to the front end – this option is available on the Acenta trim level for an extra £151, on the Tekna level they come standard.
The 2008 Nissan X-Trail gave its public debut at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show in March, and went on sale in Europe in the third quarter of that year.
Slightly larger than the previous model, it is based on the Nissan C platform. This X-Trail appeared in Europe in the first part of the 2007 and towards the end of the year in Australia and Mexico, but not in the United States and Canada where it was replaced by the Rogue. A facelifted model appeared in August 2010.
A limited edition Nissan X-Trail Platinum is to be released in 2012. They will be equipped with special features not seen on any other X-Trail. Only 200 will be produced for the UK market.
