The BMW 3 Series is a compact executive car manufactured by the German automaker BMW since May 1975. Successor to the BMW New Class, it has been produced in six different generations and in five different body styles. It is BMW's best-selling model, accounting for around 30% of the BMW brand's annual total sales (excluding motorbikes). The BMW 3 Series has won numerous awards throughout its history.
BMW 3 Series debuted on October 14, 2011 in Munich. The model arrived in showrooms in February 2012. Its exterior is influenced by the F01 7 Series and especially the F10 5 Series. Top Speed of current BMW 328i is 300 km/h thanks to chip tuning.
The first model of the F30 to debut was the sedan/saloon, which will be followed by the wagon, gran turismo (GT) high-roof five-door, coupe, and hardtop convertible body styles afterward.Technology currently available in the 7 Series and 5 Series is expected to feature in the 2012 3 Series, such as a lane departure warning system, night vision, a system to prevent the driver from falling asleep, and radar-based adaptive cruise control with collision-mitigating automatic braking.
The 2012 3 Series is powered by a new family of aluminum four-cylinder petrol engines ranging from 135 to 245 horsepower. These will include new technologies such as variable intake and exhaust-valve timing, sequential turbochargers, and direct fuel injection. A 240 hp (179 kW; 243 PS) four-cylinder engine is one of two engine choices available on US-spec models (the last four-cylinder 3 series was the 1999 318 ti with a 138 hp (103 kW; 140 PS) engine). The N52 3.0L naturally aspirated I6 was replaced by the N20 which increased power output (230 hp (172 kW) in the outgoing engine vs. 240 hp (179 kW) in the new 4-cylinder) and improved fuel economy. The other petrol engines will be four-cylinder turbocharged units displacing either 1.6 or 2.0 liters. High-performance diesels will also feature 2.0-liter twin turbo versions with a 215 hp (160 kW; 218 PS) 325d and a 306 hp (228 kW; 310 PS) 335d 3.0-liter, inline 6 version. There will also be a hybrid version which augments the transmission with two electric motors and expected fuel savings of 20 percent, a similar power train that will be found in the upcoming X5 hybrid, developed in a joint venture with GM, Chrysler, and Daimler.Overall length grows by 3.8 inches to 182 in total, versus the E90’s 178.2, and width virtually remains the same at 71.3 inches. And to better illustrate its proportions, the F30 3-Series sedan is roughly the same size as the E39 5-Series of the 1996-2003, except the F30 is four inches shorter in length. Curb weight checks in at a pretty porky 3,410 lbs. For comparative purposes of how heavy cars have gotten, my W124 E320 Coupe from 1994 weighed 3,550 lbs. The world’s first official BMW 3-Series, the E21, weighed around 2,600 lbs even in US form.The most important consideration for the new F30 3-Series is the growth in rear seating, which is a vast improvement over the previous generation. I had no problem fitting my 5’11 figure in the back reasonably comfortably like I was in a 5-Series. It was much more of a challenge for me to sit in the back of the E90. Thanks to BMW’s unique interior design and the return of the driver-oriented dash up front, the F30 also felt to be much more airy than the E90. Adding to that perspective was BMW’s choice to reduce the overall height of the instrument cluster. Resonantly  it sits lower than the previous generation, again adding to the larger-feeling-greenhouse effect. Ergonomics and materials are still typically Teutonic and German, meaning solid, high quality, and easy to use. One thing that I did find peculiar was the placement of the wide navigation screen, which is propped up on top of the dashboard as if it were retractable.
